[...] Last week, the Society of Professional Journalists released a statement cautioning journalists to not become part of the story. When some people, including new media professor and blogger Jeff Jarvis, interpreted that to mean reporter/doctors should not treat patients, the discussion became more heated. Blogger Tyler Dukes took on Jarvis’ denigration of SPJ’s statement, saying that Jarvis “chose to argue his points with hyperbole and distortion.” [...]

There is a bit of gonzo journalism going on in Haiti among the cable networks. If Hunter Thompson were down there, he would be saving lives, fighting off looters with a .357 Magnum in one hand and a bottle of Wild Turkey in the other, and live to tell the tale.

He would write about it, with himself a character in the story, not to toot his own horn, but to show the tragedy of Haiti in a compelling manner. People would read it, people would be touched by it and people would send help.

I;m sure the SPJ would complain about Thompson's work, but all the SPJ is warning against is self-aggrandizement and overpromotion, which cable news does well enough. Jeff Jarvis just had a knee-jerk reaction and made an ass of himself.
