Let's try something different

Despite my work as a Web editor and my aspirations to become a multimedia journalist, I feel I have a confession to make.

I am an absolutely terrible blogger.

This blog, for example, I’ve had for going on more than two years. And as indicated by the time stamp on my previous post, any followers I would have had would have no evidence to suggest I hadn’t fled to a some part of the world with no access to the Internet — like Chatham County, apparently.

But I’m still in Raleigh, tapped into broadband, with plenty of time to waste YouTube-ing Christian Bale freakout remixes and monitoring the Twittersphere for Facebook backlash. That free time leaves me without a good excuse as to why I can’t update a blog.

What’s more, I realized if I were to reinvest into a blog all the time I spend ranting about the future of journalism to my completely uninterested fiance, I could start something valuable while at the same time ensuring she doesn’t decide a shiny ring isn’t worth putting up with my shenanigans.

So that’s where this blog stands now. It’s a way for me to document my thoughts on journalism and my path through the ailing industry with sarcasm, (alleged) wit and occasional value for the casual reader. It’s incredibly interesting to be inside an industry that is transforming around you, even though it can be overwhelming at times to keep up with, and I’m eager to share and discuss that experience.

A word of warning, this won’t be all doom and gloom. After all, if we couldn’t find some humor in layoffs, furloughs, bankruptcy filings and cutbacks, what kind of hard-drinking, stubborn, cynical journalists would we be?

That’s right, frowny ones.
